Freedom, Fresh air and a slice of Hucklebones: Best of British Summertime

September 2nd, 2011

British summer time

Summer 2011 was officially the coolest summer since 1993 but despite the cool climate our little family had the BEST Summer yet. I hope you did too…

British summer time 2

Much assisting this happy summer was the quest for fish and crabs in rock pools, cream teas, sand castles and paddling in the sea down in beautiful St Agnes in Cornwall. Freedom and fresh air are all children need on holiday . It’s amazing the simplicity of happiness we have when away from all our ‘stuff’.

Agnes & Monty spent most of their time in wetsuits with a fishing net, eyes down for whatever treasures they could find in the rock pools – the biggest find being a beautiful starfish. Wow! They went to bed with sand in their hair and woke up to the cockerel crowing, they were barefoot whenever possible. No schedule, no pressure, just fun and exploringto do.

British summer time 3

Back to school is looming. Time for shoes and socks and school uniform and before long we’ll be in warm winter coats, knits and tights. Autumn is always an exciting time of year, I love the changing of this season the most but these summer images are happy reminder of good times, bare feet and that sunny yellow dress. It was our wardrobe staple for the summer… now which Hucklebones pieces are going to take us through winter? They are all stunning, just you wait and see!!

Goodbye summer…see you again soon.

xx

Little Fashion Book Vol.7

August 9th, 2011

Little Fashion Gallery Book

Amid the fears reaching across the capital and country this week we were really pleased to have some light refreshment this morning in the form of the newest edition of the Little Fashion Gallery Book. Volume 7 of the much anticipated and beautifully presented book is a great place to start when looking for key trends, colours and shapes for the upcoming season. Notoriously influential and recognised for their directional and fashion forward approach Little Fashion Gallery bring together the best of children’s fashion, toys, games and products just in time for us to check out the upcoming seasons must haves. Great news too, items from the Hucklebones A/W 11 collection have been picked out and included in this seasons trend forecasts.

LFG book vol.7

The ‘jenny wren’ print – ruffle empire silk dress gets a feature (top right) amongst striking emerald green items (a key colour this season) and neutral stone and ochre.

LFG book vol. 7

Plus one of our favourite outfits of the season the ink ponti roma jacket and tailored shorts (styled here with the Hucklebones graphic T-shirt) look absolutely fantastic. Secretly named in house as the ‘Jackie O’ jacket due to its definitive cut, graphic balance and wide set collar reminiscent of the iconic First Lady. Combined with the tailored shorts make this a striking and quirky little outfit.

What the team at LFG are great at is keeping everything looking fresh and exciting. Looking at things with a different angle and presenting to us in a creative and imaginative way. It makes flicking through the pages a real treat! We have listed a few of our favourite examples below.

Pom pom dahlia wallpaper

August 3rd, 2011

Earlier this year one of our very lovely stockists Maria from Hop Like a Bunny asked if it would be possible to create a wallpaper for her new home using the fabulous ‘Pom pom dahlia’ print from the Hucklebones Spring / Summer 11 collection. Of course we were very excited about this special commission and got to work right away finding the right supplier who could deliver a great quality wallpaper and match the colours to the existing printed silk fabric. The results were fantastic and the colours were brilliantly matched with the zesty yellow dahlia creating a fabulous ‘pop’.  We were honoured to visit Maria’s gorgeous new home and to see the wallpaper in situ in all its glory. Of course we couldn’t resist taking along one of our Dahlia print dresses to compare.

Maria is someone we greatly admire for her incredible taste and talent for sourcing the best of children’s design for her wonderful shop in Holland Park – Hop Like a Bunny. It is always a treat to visit the store and to see all the lovely things she travels far and wide to find. If you would like to visit Maria’s shop yourself the address is 12 Portland Road, London, W11 4LA, the nearest tube is Holland Park – to view map click here.

Flower Fairies

July 15th, 2011

Flower Fairies

When my daughter Agnes was born my mother gave me some slightly dog-eared Flower Fairy books and a wall plate that had been lovingly stored for that very moment. A treasured part of my childhood, long forgotten, and instantly reminiscent of playing with my little sister at the bottom of the garden looking for fairies amongst the flower beds.

To be honest, despite all this nostalgia I put them to one side, looking to more modern, graphic influences such as Oliver Jeffers, Eric Carle and Charley Harper to read to my children. Recently however, my daughter (and my son!) have been asking for these whimsical poems every night. I’m thrilled to be taken back down memory lane and with our love for the outdoors and my endeavour to teach them as many tree and plant names we are all on to a winner.

Roses are beautiful at this time of year and this is one of our favourite fairies, the beautiful subtle pink really reminded me of the image of Agnes in the soft pink Cotton Voile dress in the Hucklebones summer collection. In the sale at the moment – order one here and let your little one flutter about in the summer sunshine.Flower Fairies

Down on the Farm

June 15th, 2011

Last weekend’s adventures took nature-loving Agnes & Monty to the wonderful Jimmy’s Farm!

Situated in a quiet wooded valley close to Ipswich, the farm is famous for it’s Essex Pigs, the only breed of wild animal that has been brought back from extinction. There is a great variety of farm animals to feed and pet, Guinea Pig Village, a Butterfly house, den building in the woods, a fabulous restaurant – Sunday lunch was a delicious roast pork and crackling – sorry piggies! – followed by “Pigsty Pudding” and “Mud Pie”, and the surrounding grounds have an excellent Kitchen Garden and Veg Plot.

Jimmy's farm

We spent hours at Jimmy’s Farm, it’s a wonderful place to get ‘closer to nature’ for the children, has a great relaxed vibe and with fabulous deli and butchers the parents also get a chance for a little food retail therapy. Our favourite part was wandering through the enchanting Woodland Walk to discover a clearing for Den Building – we told stories, played hide and seek and enjoyed the peace and quiet.

Jimmy's farm

In September (9th-11th) they are running Harvest, a food & music festival – http://harvestatjimmys.com/family/ – the line up for foodies, gardeners, parents and children alike looks unmissable. Get your best festival gear and wellies at the ready…We thoroughly recommend a visit.
